artist bio deborah gortom

I have a nearly idyllic setting in which to work. Living in the Colorado mountains outside of the town of Durango, my studio along with my home is set in a quiet location with views of the mountains, surrounded by wildlife and the beauty of nature.

The only work I ever really wanted to do was art work.  My major in college was in art and I have continued to study over the years taking workshops and classes in many different mediums. I am now expanding my work as an artist to involve teaching some of the skills I have learned and some of the experience I have gathered over the years.

I love working with just about every type of art material and in combining many of them in my mixed media collages and canvases. I have never been one to stick with one style or medium, the fun of my work is in constantly changing and expanding what I do. For many years I 've mainly worked with fiber - painting it, weaving and knitting it, sculpting it. I created and sold one-of-a-kind wearable art as well as decorative home lines. The same love of texture, color and form that drew me to fiber now pulls me to mixed media; I can work all those same elements into my work using different materials.

Life for me is a constantly changing experience and my work reflects that desire for growth and change.
