Collage
(k-läzh, k-)(From
the French, collé, to stick) is the assemblage of different forms
creating a new whole.
The process of layering and then subtracting from the layers is what draws me to collage. I love building up layers with papers, paints and mediums, inks, pastels, charcoal, found objects and other media to create a richly textured surface. Often after building up multiple layers, I will then grind some of them down again with sandpaper creating a 'peeled away' effect. I try to achieve a sense of timelessness as well as a sense of mystery in my work. Is there a hidden message or remnants of something from long ago partially revealed? That is for the viewer to decide.
I love art materials of all kinds - my studio is filled with different materials I 'had' to have. By combining them in mixed media work I not only feel that I have justified purchasing something new I also love seeing the different mediums work together and play off one another.
I am constantly experimenting with new ideas and materials. My work ranges from more serious images, filled with meaning and philosophical messages to whimsical and playful themes.
