doll
(dol) small figure of a human being.
The myths and mysteries of ancient life as well as fun and whimsical ideas are reflected in my line of dolls. The word doll is limiting when describing these pieces. Actually they are more like figurative sculptures, human forms that are vehicles for expression and embellishment. I create them with a variety of materials and use inspiration from many different cultures and countries from around the world.
I have a large collection of materials that I draw from and gather around me as I create each doll. Each piece is unique. I have no plan in mind when I start each figure. First I sculpt the face from polymer clay. After creating a simple body form from fabric... the fun begins. Yarns, beads, found objects, as well as objects found in nature all might find their way into a doll. What type of hair and embellishments does each doll call for? They seem to speak to me and dictate what they want in order to create the characteristics that make each one unique.
Sold through galleries across the country, these dolls have found their way into collections around the world. The figures can be displayed on their wooden stands or they can be hung on a wall. Each tribal member has a unique personality that exudes wisdom while maintaining a certain humorous, whimsical quality.
